Description
This is a World War I-era military portrait featuring a US Army soldier. The subject is depicted in a large-format, oval, sepia-toned photographic print. He is wearing a standard M1917 high-collar tunic and a wool overseas cap. The photograph is housed behind original convex bubble glass. The frame is constructed of wood with a gilt finish and decorative gesso or composition elements. It features patriotic and military motifs including an eagle with outspread wings and a central shield at the top, and crossed cannons at the base, indicating the Field Artillery branch. Raised letters flanking the eagle read U S A R. The reverse retains its original cardboard backing secured by small nails and a wire hanger.
