Description

This collection consists of the military awards, insignia, and biographical research pertaining to 2nd Lt. Harold E. Bonney Jr., a B-24 Bombardier during World War II. The primary award is an officially engraved Air Medal, featuring the inscription 2ND LT. / HAROLD E. / BONNEY, JR. / A. C. on the reverse. This medal is housed in its original black leatherette presentation case with a yellow velvet and satin lining. The group also includes a standard-issue Purple Heart medal in its original presentation case, with the reverse bearing the raised characters FOR MILITARY MERIT. A five-medal miniature ribbon bar is included, featuring the Air Medal, Purple Heart, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three bronze service stars, American Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. The insignia consists of two embroidered shoulder sleeve insignia: one 8th Air Force patch and one USAAF Hap Arnold winged star patch. Accompanying the physical items is a biographical summary sheet for 2nd Lt. Bonney of Norfolk, Virginia. The documentation identifies his service with the 701st Bomb Squadron, 445th Bomb Group, and notes that his B-24 Liberator, nicknamed Green Gremlin, was shot down on February 24, 1944, during a mission to Gotha, Germany. The research further confirms his status as a Prisoner of War held at Stalag Luft I in Barth, Germany.
