Lot 123:
Description
This is a World War II-era Type A-8 navigation stop watch manufactured by the Waltham Watch Company for the United States Army Air Forces. The instrument is specifically designated for ground speed calculations and is often referred to by the period nickname Jitterbug due to its high-speed 10-second sweep. The watch features a black dial with high-contrast yellowish-tan Arabic numerals. The main dial tracks 10 seconds per revolution, while a smaller sub-dial at the 12 o’clock position tracks elapsed minutes from 1 to 10. The movement is housed in a polished chrome-finished metal case featuring a large fluted crown at the top for start, stop, and reset functions. The original two-part cardboard shipping box is included and retains a complete identification label. The label specifies the nomenclature as Watch Navigation (Ground Speed), Type A-8, Manufacturer Part No. 130, and Specification No. 94-27749. The serial number is recorded as A.F.-44 13609, indicating a 1944 fiscal year contract. The order number is W(11-107) AC 693, with a manufacture date of December 1944. The item is accompanied by its original white cloth protective pouch.
