Spring Military Aviation and Militaria Auction
Lot 141:
Description
This is a period powder horn constructed from naturally curved bovine horn, consistent with styles utilized by the US military and state militias from the late 18th through the mid-19th century. The horn features a dark, aged patina and is sealed at the base with a domed hardwood plug, likely walnut, which is secured to the horn. A small iron pin is present at the center of the domed plug to serve as an attachment point for a leather carrying strap. The horn tapers toward the spout, which features a carved, raised collar and a section of diamond-patterned or cross-hatched knurling designed to provide a secure grip during use. The tip is open for the dispensing of black powder. No maker marks, contract numbers, inspector stamps, or scrimshaw decorations are visible on the surface.
