Description

This period battlefield relic consists of a section of weathered timber containing an embedded iron round shot. The wood fragment, likely a section of a tree or structural beam, shows significant splintering and grain loss that has partially exposed the projectile. Affixed to the side of the wood is a period paper identification label secured by four small metal pins. The label contains printed and handwritten text reading Battle Relic, Fredericksburg Va., Dec. 13, 1862, and Post 95. The reference to Post 95 indicates the item was formerly part of a Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) post collection. The iron shot is seated deep within the wood grain and exhibits a heavy, oxidized russet patina. The timber shows natural weathering and grain separation consistent with long-term exposure.
