Lot 180:
Description
This pair of boots is identified as the 1943 Pattern Escape Flying Boot, a specialized design issued to Royal Air Force aircrews during World War II. The construction features a dual-purpose design consisting of a black leather lower shoe section and a dark suede upper shaft. The lower section includes a reinforced capped toe and a front lace-up closure with black laces. The suede upper is designed to be easily removed with a knife if a pilot was downed in enemy territory, allowing the remaining lower section to function as a standard civilian shoe to aid in escape and evasion. The boots are fully lined with thick, natural-colored sheepskin shearling for high-altitude insulation. The closure system includes a full-length vertical brass-tone zipper on the side and an adjustable leather strap with a metal buckle at the top collar. The zipper pull is stamped with the manufacturer name TALON in vertical capital letters. The soles are constructed of leather with stacked heels, featuring rubber heel reinforcements with a distinctive pattern of six raised circular dots.
