Description

A United States military issue pilot oxygen mask assembly, identified as the Sierra Engineering Co. MBU-5/P pattern. This pressure-demand system was standard equipment for United States Air Force and NATO pilots during the Vietnam War and Cold War periods. The assembly consists of a molded olive green silicone rubber facepiece fitted to a rigid plastic hardshell. It includes a corrugated rubber delivery hose terminating in a metal three-pin bayonet-style connector with a green identification band. The integrated communications system features an internal microphone with an external cord and multi-pin plug. The harness is constructed of gray nylon webbing with adjustable friction buckles and black plastic quick-release attachment plates. An olive drab fabric protective cover is attached via a white cord. The front valve housing is marked with the Sierra script logo, Sierra Eng. Co., Pat. No. 3,347,229, and FSN 1660-878-4344. The harness side plates are marked with the Sierra logo, model 450-450, Sierra Eng. Co., CAGE code (92114), Ear Piece Assy, and FSN 1660-973-4350 with L and R designations. The use of Federal Stock Numbers (FSN) indicates production prior to the 1974 transition to the National Stock Number (NSN) system.
