Lot 223D:
Description
This United States Marine Corps campaign hat, also known as a Montana peak hat, dates to the World War I era. The hat is constructed from olive drab wool felt and features the characteristic four symmetrical indentations in the crown. The wide, flat brim is finished with multiple rows of concentric reinforcing stitching along the outer edge. A matching grosgrain ribbon band encircles the base of the crown. Mounted to the front is a bronze-finished USMC Eagle, Globe, and Anchor insignia depicting an eagle with outspread wings perched atop a globe showing the Western Hemisphere with a fouled anchor. The interior features a brown leather sweatband with a small cord bow at the rear and an olive drab woven cord chin strap. No manufacturer marks, contract stamps, or labels are visible on the interior or sweatband. The design and insignia style are consistent with USMC field headgear from the 1912 to 1918 period. Rolled edge.
