Description

This is a United States military pressed fiber sun helmet, a standard pattern produced during World War II. The helmet is constructed from a rigid pressed fiber frame covered in a khaki cotton twill fabric. It features metal ventilation grommets on the sides and the crown. A bronze-toned United States Marine Corps Eagle, Globe, and Anchor insignia is mounted to the front. The interior retains a brown leather sweatband and a thin adjustable fabric chin strap. The interior brim is marked with a black ink stamp for the Army Air Forces alongside the winged star logo. The interior crown features hand-stamped black block lettering reading FIRST MARINE PARACHUTE BATTALION GAVUTU 1942. This unit attribution refers to the 1st Marine Parachute Battalion, which participated in the invasion of Gavutu in the Solomon Islands in August 1942.
