Lot 266:
Description
This is a German Army (Heer) transitional steel helmet, utilizing a World War I era M1916 pattern shell refurbished for service during the Third Reich period. The steel shell is characterized by a flared skirt and prominent ventilation lugs on either side, which were originally designed for the attachment of a reinforced forehead plate. The exterior surface is finished in a dark, textured field-gray paint. A single Heer water-transfer decal is positioned on the wearer’s left side, featuring a silver-white eagle with down-swept wings clutching a swastika on a black shield. The interior is fitted with a World War II pattern M1931 leather liner, consisting of an eight-fingered leather component attached to a metal outer band with an inner spring band. The liner is secured to the shell by three split-pin rivets. A two-piece leather chinstrap is attached to rectangular D-rings and includes a single-prong metal adjustment buckle. Manufacturer and size stamps are present on the interior rim but are not legible due to paint coverage and surface oxidation.
