Spring Military Aviation and Militaria Auction
Lot 268:
Description
This lot presents a highly sought-after example of a German Model 1938 (M38) Double Decal Combat Helmet, definitively issued to the Waffen-SS during the early years of World War II. The helmet shell was manufactured by Eisenh?ttenwerk Thale (ET) in the desirable size 62, marked "ET62" on the skirt, with the specific production lot number 4339 stamped into the rear interior. The M38 model is recognized for its rolled shell edge and separate ventilation grommets, making this an authentic early-war piece. The shell retains its original smooth, field gray-green paint finish, displaying an overall patina, scuffs, and natural wear consistent with genuine combat use and age, affirming its untouched veteran status.Crucially, both original, period-applied shield decals are present. On the wearer’s right side is the Party Shield (National colors), which is estimated to be approximately 70-80% intact and shows the expected flaking and wear of a service-used helmet. On the wearer’s left side is the highly prized SS-Runes Shield decal, which is exceptionally well-preserved at an estimated 90%+ intact. The excellent retention of the silver/gold backing and the sharp detail of the twin black Sig runes elevate the desirability of this specific helmet. The interior maintains its original, early-war aluminum liner band and the complete, multi-perforated brown leather liner. The leather shows the expected dryness, hardening, and darkening from years of use and storage, confirming the originality of the components. The helmet is complete with its original liner band and chinstrap bales, though the original leather chinstrap is absent. Authentic M38 Double Decal SS helmets are among the rarest and most desirable pieces of German militaria, making this a prime acquisition for the advanced collector.
