Description
German Model 1940 (M40) steel combat helmet manufactured by F.W. Quist, Esslingen. The exterior features a field-applied tan or sand-colored camouflage paint with a heavy textured finish, typically associated with the Mediterranean or North African theaters of operation. The shell is constructed with stamped air vents and a rolled rim. The interior of the shell retains the factory-original Luftwaffe blue-gray paint. The suspension system is a standard eight-finger leather liner attached to a zinc-plated steel band, complete with the original leather drawstring. The interior side skirt is stamped with the manufacturer mark Q64. The rear interior skirt displays hand-painted personalization consisting of the initials P S in tan paint, with a smaller LN 17 designation, indicating the Luft-Nachrichten or Air Force Signals Abteilung 17. The helmet is fitted with an original leather chinstrap featuring a steel buckle.
