Description
This collection consists of approximately 50 vintage black-and-white and sepia-toned photographs and related ephemera documenting United States personnel during World War II and the immediate post-war era, with a primary focus on the U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF). The archive includes a large-format group photograph of approximately 70 U.S. Army soldiers posed in a snowy landscape in front of a corrugated metal Nissen or Quonset hut. The personnel are pictured in M1941 field jackets, M1 steel helmets, and garrison caps, with visible rank chevrons for Staff Sergeant and Sergeant. This photograph is inscribed Belgium 1944 in stylized script at the bottom center and bears the signature C. TORFS. at the bottom right. The archive contains a calling card for Ralph E. Odenwald, Lieutenant, Air Corps, Army of the United States. Additional items include a large group photo titled Third Class Air Forces Staff Course dated December 194x and a snapshot captioned Pope Field N.C. 1948. The subject matter features individual and group portraits of officers and enlisted men in Class A and field uniforms, personnel wearing flight jackets and pilot wings, and images of military hardware including B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, transport aircraft, and coastal defense artillery. The collection also contains candid snapshots of base life in tropical and stateside locations, a portrait of a woman in a Women’s Army Corps (WAC) uniform, and photographs with handwritten identifiers including the names Clout Hoskins and Dr. Gil Getty.
