Description
This Victorian sterling silver match safe, also known as a vesta case, was produced by the Gorham Manufacturing Company of Providence, Rhode Island. The piece features a rectangular shape with rounded edges and a hinged lid. Both sides are decorated with elaborate repousse and chased scrollwork, foliate motifs, and shell-like patterns characteristic of late 19th-century design. Each side features a central cartouche, with the front cartouche remaining blank and unmonogrammed. The match safe is constructed from two die-stamped halves joined with a soldered seam. The interior lip is stamped with the word STERLING and the Gorham hallmark group featuring a lion passant facing right, an anchor, and a Gothic-style letter G.
