Description
This lot consists of three vintage metal accessories for matchbooks and matchboxes, featuring both promotional and decorative designs from the mid-20th century. The first item is a metal matchbook cover produced by The Kemper Thomas Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio. The piece features a lithographed reddish-brown woodgrain pattern. The front is inscribed Compliments of A. H. WEBSTER GROTON, N. Y. while the reverse reads Our Departmental Lumber Yard Responds to Every Need in Our Line. The manufacturer mark is stamped on the side of the metal frame. The second item is an enameled metal matchbook holder. It features a white enameled front face with a raised, gold-tone fleur-de-lis in the center and four smaller incised fleur-de-lis motifs at the corners. It includes a gold-tone metal promotional insert for Mortimer’s Shenanigans located at 64 Genesee Street Mall in Auburn, New York. The third item is a metal matchbox sleeve designed to fit over a small matchbox. The front features a black silhouette of a man in a top hat tipping his hat to a woman in a long dress, set against a mottled gold-flecked background. The reverse side is finished with a dark texture and a central gold-tone floral and foliate scrollwork motif.
