Description
Full title: Large Sicilian Battle Relief Wall Sculpture – Antonio Daneri – Rare
Large, hand-painted carved relief depicting a medieval battle scene with mounted knights, soldiers, castle walls, and detailed architectural elements. The reverse retains the original exhibition label identifying the artist as Antonio Daneri Palermo, Italy. 12 inches x 44 inches. The relief depicts episodes from the medieval chivalric stories surrounding Charlemagne and the Paladins of France, a favorite subject of Sicilian cart makers. The inscriptions along the lower edge identify individual scenes and characters, including Orlando and Carlo Magno.
Most importantly, the original paper label documents its inclusion in the 1953 Rome exhibition L’Arte nella Vita del Mezzogiorno d’Italia. The official Quadriennale di Roma archive confirms that exhibition. Antonio Daneu was a prominent Palermo art historian, collector, and dealer who helped preserve and promote Sicilian cart art.
