Description
WWI German Aviator’s Interim Baton with Elaborate Cloth-Stitch Covering and Imperial Aviation Pommel. Offered here is an authentic WWI-era German aviator’s interim baton, distinguished by its highly elaborate, precision-applied cloth-stitch covering. Highly elaborate ceremonial baton typically associated with high-ranking army officers, serving instead as prestigious insignia for elite early-20th-century German military aviation personnel. The pommel is adorned with the official Imperial German aviation motif, a bespoke detail that highlights the wearer’s exalted status within the Imperial German Air Service (Fliegertruppen). During the infancy of aerial combat, the transition from ground-based rank customs to the specialized needs of the military aviation corps fostered the development of unique field-issued accoutrements. The aviator’s interim baton was designed for practicality during flight and service duties while retaining the dignified iconography of the German officer corps. The national eagle emblem featured on the pommel serves as the defining mark of this rare aviation-specific provenance. This piece features the aforementioned cloth-stitched shaft, fitted with aged gilt and silvered metal mounts that display the natural patina consistent with a century of preservation. The wrist strap of woven bullion cord in red and gold remains intact, terminating in a matching tasseled end that echoes the intricate craftsmanship of period-specific military regalia. No other items accompany this lot. Condition is very good throughout, exhibiting honest wear consistent with its age and provenance. The metal fittings retain a storied, period-correct character, the cloth-stitched shaft is structurally sound, and the tassel cord shows minimal fraying. A rare and evocative artifact of WWI German aviation history, suitable for the discerning collector of imperial military insignia.
