Fall 2026 Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 104:
Description
Offered here is an original-style Standarte des Fuehrers, the personal standard associated with Adolf Hitler as Fuehrer and later Supreme Commander of the Wehrmacht. The design was adopted in the mid-1930s and was used to signify Hitler’s presence at official functions, residences, military headquarters, and other state occasions. Period regulations provided for the standard in several sizes; this example is the desirable 100 x 100 cm format, corresponding to Groesse 2, one of the recognized regulation sizes for the exterior cloth standard. The square standard is executed on a red field with a large central white disc enclosing a black swastika, surrounded by a broad golden oak-leaf wreath. Each corner carries a gold-colored eagle device, alternating between Party and state/Wehrmacht-style eagle patterns, all oriented toward the center. The field is framed by the characteristic black-and-white border associated with the Fuehrerstandarte. This arrangement corresponds to period illustrations and surviving documented examples of the personal standard. Of particular importance is the white reinforced hoist edge, which is clearly stenciled "St. des Fuehrers 100X100", identifying the piece by function and regulation dimensions. Surviving original 100 x 100 cm examples are known with essentially this same abbreviated designation on the hoist reinforcement, including examples marked Stand. d. Fuehrers together with the 100 x 100 cm size. The standard is of printed textile construction, with the complex eagle, wreath, and swastika imagery executed directly into the fabric rather than separately embroidered. Period exterior Fuehrerstandarten are documented in this printed form, while more elaborate embroidered standards were also produced for ceremonial and interior display. The present example retains strong red, black, white, and gold coloration, with folds, handling wear, and age evident throughout. The Standarte des Fuehrers was among the most recognizable personal command standards of the Third Reich and was displayed specifically in connection with Hitler’s presence. Its use is documented in contemporary flag regulations and wartime identification material. A visually striking and historically significant example of a WWII German Fuehrerstandarte in the regulation 100 x 100 cm size, retaining its important hoist designation and strong period appearance. Condition as photographed.
