Lot 143:
Description
WWII U.S. M1A1 Anti-Tank Blast Mine, Inert Display Example, with Original Matching Cotton Fabric Dust and Sand Cover Offered here is an inert, display-condition example of the U.S. M1A1 anti-tank mine, complete with its scarce original tailored cloth dust cover – a survival that is seldom encountered still paired with its parent mine. No serial number, unit marking, or maker’s stamp is legible in the photographs, and no separate biography or find history accompanies the piece; its story rests in the documented history of the type itself and in the object as recovered. Developed by the U.S. Ordnance Department early in the Second World War as a refinement of the earlier M1 mine, the M1A1 anti-tank blast mine was fielded by combat engineers in every theater where American armor and mechanized units faced enemy tanks – from the deserts of North Africa through Sicily, Italy, and Normandy, and across the island campaigns of the Pacific. Its low stamped-steel body was designed to be rapidly emplaced, camouflaged, and triggered by the weight of a vehicle’s track or wheel bearing down on the distinctive four-armed pressure
