Description

WWII US Airborne Paratrooper Luminous Identification Disk, Circa 1944. Offered here is a rare, compact luminous disk designed as a covert identification marker for U.S. paratroopers during the clandestine night drops preceding the Normandy Invasion of June 6, 1944. These critical devices served as vital signaling aids, allowing friendly troops to identify one another in the dark and mitigate the risk of friendly fire during the chaotic early hours of D-Day. Paratroopers typically secured these markers to the back of their M1 helmets via helmet nets, integrated them into tactical webbing, or stitched them directly onto uniform components. The piece features a central, faintly phosphorescent compound designed to emit a low-light glow, providing essential visibility without the danger of revealing the soldier’s position to enemy fire. Its design emphasizes tactical utility and low-profile concealment, marking it as a highly sought-after piece of airborne field equipment. The obverse presents a circular stamped-metal flange with the legends "POISON" and "INSIDE, " elements that historically served as technical identifiers or protective markers on specific military apparatus. The reverse displays a shallow rim enclosing a translucent window over a pale, luminous backing disc. Condition is fair to good; the stamped face shows oxidation and patina consistent with age and field use, while the mounting eyelets remain intact. The window surface shows minor clouding and toning consistent with the material’s age. Surviving examples of these early identification disks are exceptionally rare and represent a profound piece of D-Day history, offering a tangible link to the clandestine operations of the American airborne divisions.
