Fall 2026 Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 214:
Description
Baltic Cross (Baltenkreuz), 1919 – gilt overlay, pin-back. Breast badge of the 1919 Baltic campaign: darkened or silvered ground cross with a separately applied gilt cross, four rivets, hinge pin and catch, small shield mark on the reverse. After the Armistice, German Freikorps and the Baltic Landeswehr held Courland and Riga against the Red Army; the Baltischer Nationalausschuss instituted this cross in July 1919 for men who served at least three months in Latvia and Estonia. It was unofficial at first, later tolerated in the Reichswehr. The usual striking has plain gilt arms; this example carries fleur-de-lis terminals on the overlay. Gilt still bright; ground worn; pin complete. A Freikorps Baltic Cross of the gilt-on-dark 1919 type.
