Description
RARE Prussian 1813 Iron Cross 1st & 2nd Class Grouping with Antique Presentation Case. Exceptional and rare original Prussian Iron Cross grouping comprising an authentic 1813 Iron Cross 1st Class (EK1) and 1813 Iron Cross 2nd Class (EK2), preserved together in an antique presentation case. The EK1 is the scarce early sew-on form, constructed with a plain black magnetic iron core within a finely ribbed silver frame and full silver reverse backing fitted with eight individually soldered attachment loops, two to each arm. The EK1 is unmarked and weighs approximately 12.5 grams. The accompanying EK2 features the classic Prussian crown and "FW" cypher above three central oak leaves and the date "1813," with a plain opposing face, finely ribbed silver frame, suspension ring, and black-and-white Prussian ribbon. The EK2 weighs approximately 16.66 grams and displays the distinctive stepped iron-core construction on both sides associated with early 1813-pattern manufacture. Both crosses retain wonderful untouched age, with oxidation, patination, surface wear, and areas of loss to the original blackened iron finish. The grouping is housed in an antique black pebbled presentation case with decorative brass hardware, purple velvet interior, and cream silk-lined lid showing age and impressions from long-term storage. The case is believed to be a later private-purchase presentation or storage case and is not represented as the original issue case. An exceptionally scarce opportunity to acquire both classes of the historic 1813 Prussian Iron Cross, instituted by King Friedrich Wilhelm III during the Napoleonic Wars and representing the original form of what became Germany’s most recognizable military decoration.
