Description

WWII German Ordnungspolizei Schutzpolizei Panzer NCO. Rare and visually striking World War II German **Ordnungspolizei armored-unit uniform grouping**, consisting of a black Panzer-style wrap tunic, matching black trousers, and black leather belt with period brass-finished buckle. The black wrap tunic follows the distinctive armored-crew pattern developed for vehicle personnel, but is configured with **Schutzpolizei des Reiches** insignia rather than standard Heer Panzer insignia. Police armored personnel are documented as wearing black Panzer uniforms distinguished by **police-green branch color**, green-backed shoulder insignia, police-pattern collar tabs, and the characteristic Ordnungspolizei sleeve eagle.
The tunic retains matching **Schutzpolizei NCO shoulder boards**, constructed with dark brown inner braiding, silver/aluminum outer braid, and green branch-color underlay. This combination is characteristic of Schutzpolizei NCO insignia; the exact rank designation depended upon the period, as this general shoulder-board pattern was associated with **Oberwachtmeister before the 1942 rank revisions and Wachtmeister thereafter**.The collar carries matching green-and-silver police-pattern Litzen, while the upper left sleeve bears the highly distinctive **green embroidered Polizei sleeve eagle**, identifying the wearer with the Schutzpolizei. Bright police-green was the recognized branch color of the Reich Schutzpolizei and was used on collar insignia, shoulder insignia, piping, and sleeve emblems.
Of particular interest is the **single-tank destruction badge** worn on the opposite upper sleeve. This award, officially known as the **Sonderabzeichen fuer das Niederkaempfen von Panzerkampfwagen durch Einzelkaempfer**, recognized the destruction of an enemy armored vehicle by an individual soldier using hand-held weapons or other close-combat means. The award took the form of a metal tank silhouette mounted to a horizontal metallic ribbon with dark borders, matching the configuration visible on this tunic. The presence of this combat award gives the uniform considerably greater historical interest and suggests a wearer who had experienced direct anti-armor combat.
The tunic also retains a red-white-black ribbon in the buttonhole, consistent with the **Iron Cross 2nd Class ribbon**, along with its internal black lining, adjustment ties, and period construction details. The matching trousers are manufactured from similar black cloth and retain their original belt loops, pockets, closures, and tailoring. Completing the group is a substantial black leather enlisted/NCO belt with a period German buckle displaying the national emblem and swastika within a wreath. The leather shows significant age, surface wear, finish loss, and edge abrasion but remains an evocative accompaniment to the uniform.
Police armored units were comparatively small and specialized formations, and surviving black Panzer wrappers bearing genuine Ordnungspolizei insignia are significantly less commonly encountered than standard Heer examples. Period references document police Panzer personnel wearing essentially the Army-style black armored uniform but with green branch piping and Polizei-specific insignia, including the wreathed police eagle on the left sleeve. This group therefore represents an unusual intersection of **German armored warfare and Ordnungspolizei service** during the Second World War.
The uniform exhibits honest age and wear throughout, including surface lint, scattered moth tracking or small holes, minor seam and lining wear, oxidation and toning to metal insignia, and general signs of period use and storage. Interior markings are faint and partially legible, and no wearer’s name has been conclusively identified from the photographs. The grouping is offered exactly as photographed, and bidders should review all images closely for construction, insignia, markings, and condition. An exceptionally interesting ensemble for the advanced collector of **WWII German Panzer uniforms, Ordnungspolizei, Schutzpolizei, armored-unit insignia, or German combat awards**.
