Description

WWII German Heer Panzer Regiment Grossdeutschland Panzer Wrap. Impressive World War II German **Heer black Panzer uniform grouping associated with the elite Grossdeutschland formation**, consisting of a black armored-crew wrap tunic and matching black trousers. The tunic is constructed in the classic short, double-breasted **Panzerjacke** or "Panzer wrapper" style and retains a particularly strong complement of insignia and decorations. The collar bears black Panzer collar patches with metal **Totenkopf** devices and contrasting piping, while the shoulder boards are NCO-pattern examples carrying the distinctive intertwined **"GD" cyphers** associated with Grossdeutschland. Period references confirm that Grossdeutschland armored personnel wore the black Panzer uniform with the characteristic GD monogram on the shoulder insignia, making these appointments among the most recognizable unit-specific distinctions of the German Army.
The right breast retains the woven **Heer national eagle**, while an **Iron Cross 2nd Class ribbon** is worn through the lapel/buttonhole in the traditional manner. A small ribbon bar is mounted above the left breast awards. Below it is a silver-colored **Infantry Assault Badge**, together with a silver-grade **Wound Badge**, creating the appearance of a combat-worn tunic belonging to a decorated veteran. The shoulder boards are silver NCO braid with applied gilt-toned GD monograms, a configuration consistent with documented Grossdeutschland NCO and officer insignia systems. Surviving original GD Panzer uniforms and shoulder boards are known with the same intertwined cypher, with metallic examples used on NCO and officer boards.
The collar configuration is particularly noteworthy. The black patches retain metal skull devices with decorative cord edging, a hallmark of German Panzer troops rather than SS insignia. The presence of the Heer breast eagle, Panzer-style collar tabs, and GD shoulder cyphers identifies the uniform within the **Army armored tradition rather than the Waffen-SS**. Original Grossdeutschland Panzer wrappers are documented with black collar patches, aluminum or iron skulls, and black Panzer cloth construction.
The matching trousers are of black wool construction and visually complement the wrapper, forming an unusually complete armored-crew uniform ensemble. The jacket interior retains period-style lining and visible size/depot-type markings. Both garments show honest service and age wear, including scattered moth tracking or small holes, minor seam wear, surface lint, and general storage wear consistent with period wool uniforms.
The **Grossdeutschland** formation evolved from the prewar Wachregiment into one of the German Army’s best-known elite formations, eventually becoming Panzergrenadier-Division Grossdeutschland. Its personnel fought extensively on the Eastern Front and wore distinctive unit insignia, most notably the intertwined GD shoulder cypher and Grossdeutschland cuff title. The GD cypher was introduced specifically for the formation and was rendered differently according to rank, including metallic examples for NCOs and officers.
A highly desirable and visually impressive **WWII German Panzer uniform group**, combining a black Heer Panzer wrapper, matching trousers, Grossdeutschland shoulder insignia, Totenkopf collar tabs, national eagle, Iron Cross ribbon, ribbon bar, Infantry Assault Badge, and Wound Badge. The combination of armored branch uniforming and identifiable Grossdeutschland insignia gives the set considerable collector interest. As with all high-value Third Reich uniforms, bidders should carefully examine the photographs for the originality and period application of each insignia and award, particularly where insignia may have been removed or reapplied during the garment’s long collecting history. Condition is Good overall with expected age, textile wear, minor moth damage, and oxidation to metal fittings as shown.
