Fall 2026 Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 4:
Description
USAF Command Pilot Wing Group: N.S. Meyer 3-Inch & Three Miniatures. A lot of four (4) vintage U.S. Air Force aviator qualification badges – one full-size 3-inch Command Pilot wing and three shirt/miniature wings (two Command Pilot, one Basic Pilot) – Cold War era, circa 1950s-1970s. This grouping illustrates the standard progression of USAF pilot insignia in the decades following the Air Force’s establishment as an independent service in 1947. The full-size wing and two of the miniatures bear the distinctive five-point star within an open laurel wreath above the central shield, denoting the Command Pilot rating – the senior aeronautical qualification, historically reserved for officers with at least fifteen years as a rated pilot and thousands of logged flight hours. The remaining miniature, absent the star-and-wreath device, represents the Basic Pilot badge, the foundational aviator qualification worn by newly winged Air Force pilots. No individual recipient is named on any of the badges, and no separate published biography or unit history accompanies the lot; their significance rests in maker attribution, construction, and place within the postwar hierarchy of USAF flight insignia. The badges reflect the transitional design language of the early Air Force era, when established military jewelers adapted Army Air Forces wing patterns to the new service’s regulations. Command Pilot wings, senior to both Pilot and Senior Pilot grades, were awarded sparingly and typically to career aviators – squadron and wing commanders, senior staff officers, and test pilots – making genuine period examples a tangible link to the officer corps that shaped Strategic Air Command and Tactical Air Command doctrine through the tense decades of the Cold War. The full-size approximately 3-inch Command Pilot wing is die-struck, its reverse stamped N.S. MEYER INC., NEW YORK alongside a small shield-form hallmark reading "22M"; the clutch fasteners are absent, with only the straight pin-posts remaining. One miniature Command Pilot wing carries a matching N.S. Meyer New York stamp with a "9M" shield hallmark and retains brass clutch-back fasteners, showing light verdigris at the reverse center. The second miniature Command Pilot wing bears a Vanguard "1V" hallmark and is likewise fitted with brass clutches. The miniature Basic Pilot wing, lacking the star-and-wreath device, is marked STERLING and appears to be missing its clutch fastener, retaining only bare pin-posts. The four badges constitute the entire lot; no case, ribbon bar, or accompanying paperwork is shown in the photographs. Condition throughout is good vintage, consistent with genuine period wear and storage: natural oxidation and tarnish patina across the silver surfaces, crisp die detail in the feather work and shield striping, and straight, intact pin-posts on all four pieces. Four modern brass clutch fasteners are present among the two smaller Command Pilot wings; the full-size wing and the small Basic Pilot wing are missing their original clutches. A solid, well-marked lot of USAF Command and Basic Pilot wings, spanning full-size and miniature formats worn across a career of Cold War-era Air Force service.
