Fall 2026 Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 5:
Description
LARGE 17-Inch USAF Command Pilot Wing Metal Wall Plaque. Oversized cast metal display of the USAF Command Pilot badge – a wall-hanging rendering, approximately 16.63 inches wide, of the highest aeronautical rating awarded to United States Air Force pilots. This plaque reproduces at dramatic scale the Command Pilot insignia: full-spread feathered wings flanking a central vertically-ribbed heraldic shield, surmounted by a five-pointed star encircled by a laurel wreath. No recipient, unit, or presentation inscription is present, and no maker’s mark appears on either face; it is a display piece rather than a personal award, and no separate biography or provenance has been located for it. Its date of manufacture cannot be firmly established from the photographs, though a late-20th- to early-21st-century origin is plausible. The Command Pilot rating stands at the summit of USAF pilot badges, historically awarded only to rated officers with a minimum of fifteen years of rated service, well over 3,000 hours of documented flight time, and command-level operational milestones – a career badge earned through sustained service in the cockpit and in leadership roles. The wreath-and-star device distinguishes it from the basic and Senior Pilot badges worn earlier in a career. Large-format insignia of this type were traditionally commissioned by base metal shops or specialty military craftsmen for display in squadron ready rooms, officers’ clubs, headquarters corridors, or as retirement tributes to veteran aviators, scaling the familiar chest-worn wing pattern up to wall size for lasting presentation. The piece is executed in a bright, polished light-colored metal, consistent with cast or machined aluminum, with the front face crisply detailing feathered wing striations, the ribbed shield, and an openwork star within the laurel wreath. The reverse is left in raw, as-worked condition, showing pronounced grinding and machining marks from fabrication, with two small drilled holes near the upper wing roots for wall mounting. No case, box, or accompanying paperwork is included; the lot consists solely of this single plaque. Condition is very good overall: the polished front shows only minor handling marks and light surface scuffing consistent with gentle display use, while the unfinished reverse retains its original manufacturing texture. There are no structural cracks, breaks, or heavy dents, and the piece remains sturdy and ready for display. A substantial, eye-catching tribute to the USAF’s most senior flying qualification, its nearly 17-inch span giving the iconic Command Pilot wings commanding presence on any wall.
