Description
US Navy Gentex H-4 Flight Helmet Group Named ‘Backus, ‘ with VF-33 ‘Star and Lightning’ Squadron Cloth Cover, Permoflux-Equipped Inner Helmet, and Polaroid No. 1065 Aviation Goggles, circa mid-to-late 1950s This lot presents a named US Navy Type H-4 rigid flight helmet grouping, the interior sweatband inked ‘Backus, ‘ offered together with a communications-equipped cloth inner helmet, Polaroid aviation goggles, and a stenciled squadron cover tying the group to Fighter Squadron 33 (VF-33), nicknamed the ‘Starfighters’ (earlier the ‘Tarsiers’), via its distinctive star-and-lightning-bolt insignia. No separate published biography for Backus has been located, and the identification rests on the handwritten interior marking together with the squadron-specific cover, both consistent in style and construction with mid-1950s US Navy carrier aviation equipment. Gentex, trading as General Textile Mills, Inc. of New York, manufactured the segmented rigid-shell H-4 under Navy contract N383s-15583A, equipping naval aviators through the Korean War era and into the early Cold War jet age as carrier air groups transitioned from propeller-driven aircraft to swept-wing fighters. The rigid outer shell offered improved impact protection over earlier soft leather flying helmets while a separate cloth liner, fitted with earphone receivers, carried the intercom and radio connections essential to jet cockpit operations. VF-33, flying from Atlantic Fleet carriers during this period, is represented here by a personally stenciled helmet cover – squadron personnel commonly marked flight gear with unit insignia for identification and esprit de corps, and the star-and-lightning device on this example remains a vivid, immediately recognizable link to the squadron’s lineage. The helmet is a Gentex H-4, Large, its gold-painted rigid fiberglass shell bearing a Naval Aviator wings decal to the front, green paint show-through along the crown seams, and intact orange General Textile Mills / Gentex label and blue H-4 Large contract label to the interior, with ‘Backus’ handwritten on the leather headband. The separate olive drab cloth flight helmet is fitted with Permoflux PHR-10 receivers (AN-H87/U), a communications lead terminating in a jack plug, and canvas chin and neck straps. The Polaroid No. 1065 aviation goggles retain their marked leather-bound frame, tinted amber lens, suede facial padding, and adjustable elastic head strap. The black cloth helmet cover, bound in yellow tape, bears a faded but legible hand-stenciled ‘VF-33’ star-and-lightning-bolt squadron marking. Condition is very good overall for vintage flight equipment of this age. The rigid shell shows expected scuffing and edge rubbing with green undercoat visible along the seams, though its decal and interior labels remain crisp and legible; the suspension webbing and leather sweatband show light wear and adhesive degradation consistent with age. The cloth inner helmet exhibits fraying, edge wear, and small fabric losses around the crown and brow. The goggle rubber has hardened with light surface wear to the lens, and the suede lining remains intact. The squadron cover shows minor soiling and fading to the stencil. A compelling and well-documented named H-4 grouping whose VF-33 squadron cover and period communications gear bring the U.S. Navy’s early jet age vividly into focus.
