Description
WWI – Weimar-Era Reichsmarine M18 Transitional Helmet. This exceptional German Model 1918 steel helmet represents a rare transitional piece, showcasing the distinct identity of the Weimar-era Reichsmarine. Constructed on a classic WWI-pattern M18 shell, the helmet is defined by its deep skirt, rolled edge, and prominent side ventilation fittings. The exterior is finished in a dark green paint that exhibits significant age-related flaking and surface oxidation, contributing to a pronounced veteran aesthetic. The defining feature of this piece is the Reichsmarine naval shield applied to the left side. Officially adopted in 1924, the insignia depicts crossed gold anchors on a pale field, a design that preceded the standardized decals of the Third Reich. The decal remains legible despite age-induced cracking and localized losses. The interior retains its original leather liner system, featuring multiple tongues secured by a drawstring, which displays expected period staining and wear. A leather chinstrap is also present, showing dryness consistent with the age of the piece. This helmet serves as a compelling artifact of German naval history during the interwar period.
