Description

SCARCE WWII Osttruppen Don Cossack Kragenspiegel Pair, Crossed Lances on Feldgrau. A matched pair of WWII German Osttruppen collar tabs (Kragenspiegel), Don Cossack cavalry pattern, crossed lances embroidered on red over feldgrau wool. This lot presents a well-preserved pair of Eastern Legion collar insignia associated with Cossack volunteers who served alongside the Wehrmacht in the latter half of the war. The tabs carry no name, unit stamp, or maker’s mark, and no separate published biography or roster can be tied to this specific example; the significance rests in the pattern itself and its place within the broader, well-documented history of Cossack collaboration under German command. The crossed-lance device on a red field is consistent with insignia standardized for Osttruppen cavalry formations from 1943 onward, specifically denoting Don Cossack units. Following the 1941 invasion of the Soviet Union, the Wehrmacht drew on strong anti-Bolshevik sentiment within Cossack communities to raise substantial volunteer formations. The best documented of these grew under Helmuth von Pannwitz, whose command expanded from scattered squadrons into the 1st Cossack Cavalry Division and, by 1944, the XV SS Cossack Cavalry Corps. To distinguish Eastern volunteers serving in German-pattern uniforms, a system of branch and rank insignia was introduced; crossed lances on red specifically marked Don Cossack cavalrymen, a direct visual reference to the traditional cavalry lance and to the storied horse-soldier heritage of the Don region. These troops fought on the Eastern Front and later in the Balkans and northern Italy, their service remaining one of the more complex and controversial chapters of German wartime recruitment in occupied Soviet territory. Each tab is a feldgrau wool trapezoid of standard collar-patch cut. The crossed lances are embroidered in off-white thread with clearly rendered arrowhead tips, worked over a red wool/rayon center panel bordered in matching red stitching. The reverse of each tab shows a pale canvas or burlap stiffener set within folded, raw wool edges – construction consistent with period field or depot manufacture; no maker’s label or date is present. The lot comprises the two tabs only, with no accompanying paperwork, uniform components, or additional insignia. Condition is very good and the pair appears unissued or unmounted: embroidery remains bright and intact with only minor age-toning, backing shows light handling fuzz and minor fraying at a few corners, and no moth holes, tears, or losses to the red or grey wool are visible. A visually striking and historically loaded pair of Don Cossack cavalry collar tabs, preserving in miniature the insignia system built for one of the Wehrmacht’s most singular and controversial Eastern volunteer formations.
