Description

Offered here is an authentic World War II German General Assault Badge with "50" Engagement Numeral, Allgemeines Sturmabzeichen mit Einsatzzahl 50, attributed to the noted Berlin manufacturer C.E. Juncker. The higher numbered grades of the General Assault Badge were instituted in June 1943 for experienced combat personnel credited with extensive qualifying assault days, with this third grade representing 50 combat engagements. The badge features the characteristic oval oak-leaf wreath surrounding the Wehrmacht eagle and swastika above crossed bayonet and stick grenade, with the separately applied rectangular "50" numeral positioned at the base. It is of semi-hollow zinc, multi-piece construction, with the central eagle and weapons assembly secured by four rivets. This construction is consistent with documented C.E. Juncker-produced "50" General Assault Badges; a known Juncker example sold by Ratisbon’s is likewise described as unmarked, zinc, semi-hollow, and fitted with four aluminum rivets. Of particular note is the distinctive indentation visible along the upper portion of the eagle’s wing, a die characteristic associated by collectors with this Juncker pattern and an important feature supporting the maker attribution. The badge retains its vertical pin, hinge, and catch assembly and displays attractive age, oxidation, finish wear, and patination throughout. Considerable detail remains to the eagle’s feathering, oak-leaf wreath, crossed weapons, and raised "50" numeral. The badge is unmarked, as is known for surviving Juncker examples of this type, with attribution based upon its die characteristics and construction rather than a stamped maker mark. C.E. Juncker of Berlin was one of Germany’s prominent wartime manufacturers of military decorations, and documented Juncker General Assault Badges are known in zinc construction. A scarce and desirable original example of the Allgemeines Sturmabzeichen mit Einsatzzahl 50, exhibiting the construction and diagnostic die characteristics associated with C.E. Juncker, Berlin.
