Fall 2026 Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 85:
Description
Offered here is an original Imperial German Militaer-Flugzeugfuehrer-Abzeichen, or Prussian Military Pilot Badge, one of the most recognizable and desirable aviation qualification badges of the First World War. Late war hollow version. Instituted by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1913, the badge was awarded to qualified military pilots of the German Army aviation service who successfully completed the required flight training and examinations during the pioneering years of military aviation. The obverse features the distinctive Imperial crown above an oval wreath of laurel and oak leaves surrounding an early Taube-type monoplane in flight over a finely detailed rural landscape of fields, hills, and buildings. The design captures the character of prewar and wartime German aviation, when fragile wood-and-fabric aircraft were rapidly evolving into essential reconnaissance and combat machines. The badge is of hollow stamped construction and retains its long vertical pin and barrel-style hinge assembly. The surfaces display attractive age, toning, and wear throughout, while the aircraft, landscape, wreath, and Imperial crown remain sharply defined. No maker mark is visible in the photographs, a feature encountered on many privately purchased and wartime examples. A highly desirable original Imperial German Military Pilot Badge, directly associated with the birth of German combat aviation and the Luftstreitkraefte of World War I. An excellent addition to an advanced collection of Imperial German militaria, aviation insignia, or early military flight material. Condition as photographed.
