Fall 2026 Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 86:
Description
Original Imperial German Abzeichen fuer Militaer-Flugzeugfuehrer, the Prussian Military Pilot Badge instituted in 1913 for qualified military aviators of the Imperial German flying service. This example is a hollow-backed, die-struck late-war type, a construction generally associated with the later period of First World War manufacture when material conservation and simplified production became increasingly common. The badge retains the classic Prussian pilot pattern with Imperial crown, oak-and-laurel wreath, central aircraft and landscape motif, and tied bow at the base. The obverse remains sharply detailed, with strong definition throughout the crown, wreath, central device, and lower landscape. The reverse shows the characteristic negative relief of the hollow-struck construction and retains its period long vertical pin, barrel hinge, and wire catch assembly. The overall construction, hardware, surface aging, and patination are consistent with known original late-war examples. The badge displays honest age throughout, including finish wear, oxidation, and darkening to recessed areas, while preserving substantial original detail and visual presence. A desirable original late-war hollow-backed Prussian Military Pilot Badge, representative of the wartime production variants encountered among Imperial German aviation insignia. Condition as photographed.
