Description

US NAVY MK 72-8 (SD) Proximity Nose Fuze Canister, ADF MK 44. US Navy MK 72-8 (SD) Proximity Nose Fuze sub-assembly storage canister, stenciled ADF MK 44 MODS – an empty ordnance container from the Korean War-era naval anti-aircraft fire-control chain. This cylindrical black-painted steel canister was manufactured to hold a single Mark 72 series variable-time (VT) proximity nose fuze sub-assembly prior to its mating with an ADF (Auxiliary Detonating Fuze) Mark 44 unit within the projectile’s explosive train. It carries no personal name, unit marking, or serviceman association; this is a depot-level ordnance storage item rather than a personally issued artifact, and no separate published history exists for this individual example beyond the stenciled nomenclature itself. The Mark 72 fuze family descended from the wartime VT proximity fuze program and was refined through the Korean War and into the early Cold War for use with 3-inch and 5-inch naval anti-aircraft guns aboard surface combatants. These fuzes contained miniaturized radio transmitter-receiver radar circuitry and vacuum-tube electronics that triggered detonation as a shell passed within lethal range of an aircraft, without requiring a direct hit – a technology credited with transforming fleet air defense in the Pacific war and carried forward into Korea-era gunnery doctrine. Because the internal electronics were fragile and moisture-sensitive, each sub-assembly was shipped and stored in a dedicated hermetic metal tube such as this one, guarding against shock, salt air, and humidity between ordnance depots and shipboard magazines.
