December 7th Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 276:
Description
A fantastic original World War II U.S. Marine Corps USMC P-42 Reversible Camouflage Utility jacket known by collectors as Frogskin or Duck Hunter camouflage. This iconic uniform was the first major camouflage uniform adopted and widely used by the USMC in the Pacific Theater, most famously during the Battle of Tarawa. Made from the Herringbone Twill HBT fabric and feature the distinctive reversible design: one side is printed with the lighter green/brown Jungle pattern, and the reverse is printed with the light tan/brown Beach pattern. This allowed Marines to quickly adapt to different island environments. The uniform features authentic construction details, including black metal snaps marked U.S. MARINE CORPS visible on jacket cuffs/pockets. The jacket is a simplified cut, similar to the P-41 utility jacket, with minimal pockets for reversibility. This jacket is in excellent, lightly used condition with vibrant colors and minimal fading, making it a highly desirable matching grouping. The P-42 is significantly rarer than the later P-44 pattern and is a cornerstone artifact for any serious collection of WWII USMC or Pacific Theater militaria.
