Lot 164:
Description
This is a Chinese military magazine chest rig, commonly referred to as a Chicom rig, manufactured for the Type 56 7.62mm submachine gun. The item is constructed from heavyweight ochre-colored cotton canvas with woven cotton webbing straps and wooden toggle closures. The front of the rig features three central magazine cells designed to hold 30-round AK-type magazines. Flanking these are two smaller accessory pouches on the side, also secured with wooden toggles. The reverse of the canvas body features four columns of black ink stamps. The right column identifies the model as the Type 56 7.62mm Submachine Gun. The second column identifies the item as a Magazine Pouch. The center column features a single character within a square border. The left column indicates a manufacturing date of 1961. The rig is equipped with two fixed-length shoulder straps and two waist ties. This specific pattern of equipment was widely distributed during the Cold War and is frequently associated with North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong forces during the Vietnam War, as well as Soviet forces during the Soviet-Afghan War.
