Description

This lot features two antique 19th-century vesta cases, or match safes. The first is a cylindrical brass case with heavy relief-molded decoration including acanthus leaf motifs and a geometric beaded band. The lid is embossed with the markings PATENT WAX VESTAS WARRANTED 150. The underside of the base contains a concentric-ringed striking surface and is embossed with the text PATENT VESTA LIGHT BOX IMPROVED SAFETY. Three period-style wax vesta matches are included within the case. The second item is a slim, rounded rectangular case made of dark vulcanite hard rubber. The piece features a friction-fit cap and subtle molded banding. It is marked with N.R.CO. on one side and GOODYEAR’S PT. on the other, signifying production by the Novelty Rubber Company using the Charles Goodyear patented process.
