Description

This lot consists of three antique pocket match safes, also known as vestas, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. The pieces are constructed from nickel-plated white metal, likely brass, featuring various decorative inlays and relief motifs. The first item is a promotional advertising safe for a New York City establishment. The front side contains a raised central oval plaque with the embossed inscription: COMPLIMENTS OF / PETER GANDERT’S HOTEL / 759 ELTON AVE. / BET. 156TH – 157TH STS. / NEW YORK. This plaque is set against a multi-colored iridescent pearlescent celluloid or shell inlay. The reverse side features a raised relief depiction of a woman in profile smelling a flower, set within a central oval frame. The second item is a figural safe decorated with pinkish pearlescent inlays on both the front and back. The front features a central raised relief of a woman wearing an ornate feathered headdress or turban. The reverse side displays a raised relief of a dog’s head, resembling a terrier. The third item is an equestrian-themed metal safe with a textured finish. The front features a raised relief of a horse’s head in profile, set within an oval frame against a cross-hatched background. The reverse side includes an oval medallion with an engraved floral or leaf motif. This safe is equipped with a small striker knob located at the bottom corner.
