December 7th Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 129:
Description
This is a rare and highly evocative World War II grouping consisting of a U.S. Navy Corpsman medical bag fully loaded with period-correct, sealed medical supplies and historically significant provenance. The canvas bag is marked U.S.N. in bold black stencil and is uniquely stenciled in red with the names of three major, pivotal battles in the Pacific Theater: TARAWA, SAIPAN, and OKINAWA, along with a red cross on the flap. This stenciling strongly indicates the bag was carried or used by a Navy Hospital Corpsman in a Marine unit through the most brutal island campaigns of the war. The bag is generously filled with a wide array of sealed, unissued WWII medical supplies, including items such as sterile gauze dressings, burn injury sets, sulfanilamide packets, iodine swabs, and a snake bite first aid kit. Also included is a separate canvas POCKET CASE M.D. U.S.N. manufactured by J. SKLAR MFG. CO. containing various essential surgical instruments, including forceps and scalpels, vital for emergency frontline care. The supplies are contained in original packaging and wrappers, most of which are marked with stock numbers, reinforcing the mid-1940s date. This complete, detailed kit provides an unparalleled, tangible look into the heroic and dangerous role of the Navy Corpsmen in the Pacific War.
