December 7th Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 181:
Description
This lot features an extremely rare and desirable example of an Imperial Japanese Naval Landing Force IJNLF Type 90 or Type 3 Combat Helmet, presented in a highly sought-after configuration with its original camouflage net. Helmets from the IJNLF or Japanese Marines are significantly scarcer than standard Imperial Japanese Army IJA issue, making this a premium acquisition.
The helmet shell features a fascinating field-applied camouflage over the original factory drab green paint. This camouflage appears to be a worn pattern of reddish-brown and darker tones over the lighter base, showing substantial chipping and authentic patina consistent with combat use in the Pacific Theater. Crucially, the helmet is fitted with a period-applied, multi-colored rope camouflage net, which covers the entire dome and is tightly secured around the rim. This net features strands of tan/khaki, green, and reddish-brown rope, demonstrating an authentic, field-modified appearance designed to hold foliage and break up the helmet s silhouette.
Attached to the front crown, over the net, is the distinctive IJNLF insignia, a non-ferrous metal badge featuring a foul anchor surmounted by a stylized cherry blossom. This insignia, which is pinned or riveted through the shell, is a key identifier for this scarce service branch. The interior is complete with the correct leather liner system for this model, consisting of leather pads laced together and suspended inside the shell. The leather shows heavy discoloration, drying, and aging. The original tan canvas or cotton chinstrap is also present and affixed to the liner band, showing appropriate age and wear.
This helmet is an exceptional historical relic, combining the rarity of the Naval Landing Force insignia with the highly desirable field-used camouflage paint and original rope netting, making it a stellar piece of Pacific Theater militaria.
