Description
This outstanding and deeply personal archive relates to 1st Lt. Andrew J. Stephens Jr. (O-704764), a B-17 Flying Fortress pilot who served with distinction in the European Theater of Operations as part of the legendary 100th Bomb Group, the ?Bloody Hundredth.? His documented service spans some of the most pivotal campaigns of the war, including Normandy, Southern France, the Ardennes, and Naples-Foggia, placing him at the heart of the Allied air offensive over Europe. The 100th Bomb Group?s extraordinary combat record, marked by heavy losses and unwavering resolve, has been brought to modern audiences through the acclaimed HBO series Masters of the Air, making archives such as this both historically significant and highly sought after. The grouping is rich in both visual and material history. Headgear includes two classic Flighter by Bancroft officer crusher caps, one olive drab example, and one tan khaki example, both evocative of the relaxed, battle-worn style favored by combat aircrew. Medallic awards include a cased Air Medal with ribbon bar and lapel pin, accompanied by boxed American Campaign, Army Good Conduct, and World War II Victory Medals. Insignia includes silver-tone pilot wings, ribbon bars with campaign stars, and an honorable discharge patch. Notably, the actual A-2 flight jacket worn by a member of Lt. Stephens? crew is offered separately in Lot 330, providing a rare opportunity to reunite related pieces. The archive also includes original dog tags, approximately a dozen period photographs showing B-17 crews and the aircraft Once in a While, as well as training materials including Base Leg (Class 44-A), The Eagles (Class 43-K), and a Flight 44-A binder.Further enhancing the historical depth are battlefield and souvenir elements, including a piece of flak and a captured German Luftwaffe-style metal breast eagle, tangible reminders of the dangers faced and the environments endured. Altogether, this is a compelling, well-rounded bomber pilot grouping tied to one of the most famous units of the war, offering exceptional display value and a direct connection to the story dramatized in Masters of the Air.
