U.S. Air Force Type P-1B protective flight helmet assembly manufactured by the Selby Shoe Company. This early jet-age flight gear consists of a white hard-shell protective helmet, an externally mounted spring-tensioned dark visor, and a green rubber oxygen mask. The interior of the helmet contains a woven label identifying the piece as an Assembly for Helmet, Protective, Type P-1B and P-3, Size Large, under Specification No. 47-D-3185-1 and Order No. AF 21235. The interior leather crown pad features a gold-stamped U.S. Air Force winged star emblem and is handwritten with the attribution Capt J. Phelan. The exterior shell displays an early transitionary U.S. Air Force decal on the front, featuring a white star with a red center on a blue field flanked by golden wings. The visor housing is marked with a decal representing the rank of Captain. The attached oxygen mask is an MS22001 style equipped with a corrugated rubber breathing hose and a Sierra-brand quick-disconnect connector marked with part number 224-01 and patent number 2,945,501. The helmet is fitted with internal earphones and a communications cord terminating in a PL-291 plug.
