Lot 222:
Description
This United States Air Force (USAF) Type D-1 Heavy Air Crew Cap was manufactured by the Sigmund Eisner Co. during the early Cold War and Korean War era. The cap is constructed from a heavy-duty khaki-tan cotton twill exterior and features a long, multi-stitched stiffened bill. Designed for extreme cold-weather flight conditions, the piece includes large, fold-down ear and neck flaps. The interior and the underside of the ear flaps are lined with a thick, yellow-gold synthetic alpaca or wool pile. The AF prefix in the contract number confirms its issue by the United States Air Force following its establishment as a separate branch in 1947. A rectangular brown cloth label is sewn to the interior lining with gold-tone printed text.
