Description

This collection consists of personal items from the late 19th to early 20th century. The primary item is a Victorian combination match safe and memorandum tablet featuring a brass-toned metal frame with a hinged lid. The writing surface is a cream-colored material, likely celluloid or ivory. The metal rim is stamped with N.J. ALDEN’S PATENT DEC. 26 81 and CO. MERIDEN, CONN. U.S.A. referring to Nelson J. Alden’s patent for a combined memorandum book and match-safe. The assortment includes a rectangular metal case with rounded corners decorated in a black and silver checkerboard pattern, typical of cigarette or calling card cases from the early 20th century. Also present are two dark brown leather protective sleeves, one of which is embossed with a heraldic crest. Accompanying these items is a thin wooden or heavy fiberboard identification tag with a handwritten ink inscription that reads Geo. Thompson Penn Yan – Yates Co. N.Y. providing provenance to Yates County, New York.
