Description

This lot comprises three antique pocket match safes, also known as vesta cases, dating from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. The first item is an embossed brass-toned metal commemorative piece for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The front displays high-relief architectural depictions labeled Horticultural Building and Administration Building, with the text World’s Fair and the dates 1492 and 1893. The reverse features an Art Nouveau style foliate scrollwork pattern with a diagonal blank cartouche. The second item is a promotional advertising safe for The Steinbeck Drug Co. located at the corner of Third and Park Avenue in Barberton, Ohio. It features a metal body with a dark, textured wrap, likely leatherette, with gold-toned printed text. It includes a side-hinged lid and an integrated striking surface on the bottom. The third item is a Victorian-style brass or gilded metal case featuring an overall engraved pattern of trailing vines, leaves, and flowers on both sides. All three pieces include integrated textured striking surfaces on the bottom.
