Description

Original WWI Prussian Observer badge (Flugzeugbeobachterabzeichen) by the esteemed firm of C.E. Juncker, Berlin. This two-piece die-struck construction features the distinctive Prussian eagle clutching a lightning bolt, set against an oval oak-and-laurel leaf wreath, surmounted by the Imperial Crown (Kaiserkrone). The badge serves as a quintessential artifact of early German military aviation. Historically, this badge represents the professionalization of the observer corps during the Great War. While the piece exhibits evidence of period history-specifically, the retaining pins have been removed and the maker’s hallmark has been professionally obliterated, likely reflecting the tumultuous transition of military equipment following 1918-the structural integrity and die-struck quality remain unmistakably consistent with Juncker production standards. The front enamels and silvered finishes display a consistent, authentic patina acquired through years of service. The reverse configuration shows the legacy of its manufacture, with traces of the mounting points visible. Despite the deliberate removal of identifying markings, the sculptural detail of the wreath and the eagle’s plumage confirm its high-quality construction. Overall condition is very good, offering a rare opportunity to acquire an original wartime observer badge that bears the silent, compelling marks of post-war modification. A significant piece for any collection of Imperial German aviation insignia.
